Alchemists, Philosophers, Visionaries, Teachers, and Mother Nature alike teach us the importance of the Septad, the seven, the periodicity of cycles represented through the patterned portal of 7.
Seven is a symbolic key to understanding the rhythm of life as numbers are nature’s divine language expressed in patterns.
7 is considered to be a symbol for spiritual perfection and is known as Septos, a Holy, divine and Immaculate number spanning the ages through myth, history, religion and philosophy as 7 awakens desire within and is an indicator of both the thing we most want and it’s unexpected delivery. 7 is personified through the energies of momentum, manifestation, action, change and choice.
It is the number of the philosopher, sage, and wisdom seeker and when a 7 appears in any fashion, you can understand that you are receiving a cyclical and energetic invitation to the banquet of higher purpose.
7 in Mythology
Seven is historically a mystical number and it’s mythological and symbolic use is broad and deep as almost every religion and culture views 7 as superfluously significant.
Seven represents the world of nature and for the trained occultist, 7 has a deeper significance intertwined with the seven principles of man, the seven root races, the seven superior worlds, and the seven celestial spheres.
The Seven Sages of the Vedic tradition were regarded as luminous celestial beings, the repository of all wisdom who fully comprehended the inner dynamics of the universe – how all things are interconnected and interdependent. They were the teachers of humanity establishing cosmic laws and rituals through embodiment of 7.
The Seven Sages of Greece were known as beings of divine origin – known for their wisdom in all areas of knowledge, from poetry and politics to predicting eclipses. The Seven Sages created the maxims that appear at many ancient sites giving breathe and depth to the expression “Know Thyself”.
The title of Seven Sage has been given to archetypes such as Hermès, Thoth, Mercury, Osiris and the ultimate bringers of knowledge to our earthly experience.
The followers of Horus, are ascribed as the seven angels and the seven sages, who provided illicit heavenly knowledge to the keepers of humanity. These mytho poetic beings remembered both as the bearers and the preservers of knowledge founded societies that guarded ancient knowledge, ceremonies, and technology for millennia after the deluge. These Orders of Wisdom encoded the number 7 within the chain of transmission from initiates to initiates enabling remote generations the chance to unearth and discover these fragments of knowledge millennia after it was encrypted.
King Solomon, who is remembered as one of the Seven sages, was seven years building the Temple of Soloman, which was dedicated in the seventh month.
The Egyptians had seven original and higher gods and ceremonial dedications to the seven gates and the seven keys, the Phoenicians seven kabiris, the Persians seven fires burning before the altars of Mithra—the Roman version of a Seven Sage.
There were the seven peninsulas, the seven islands, seven seas, mountains, and rivers of India; the seven worlds of the Chaldeans and their seven Spirits; the seven constellations mentioned by Hesiod and Homer, the Parsees seven angels opposed by seven demons, and seven celestial spheres are maintained in nearly all religious systems.
In religious tradition, there are seven deadly sins, seven virtues, seven days of creation, and seven gifts from the Holy Spirit. The number seven occurs on almost every page of Genesis and in Revelation we find seven golden lamps, seven stars, seven seals, seven letters addressed to the seven churches, seven trumpets sounded by seven angels, seven thunders, seven kings and seven plagues poured out from seven bowls.
All of Nature is under the sway of the power of the 7 great forces of the universe, preceding and evolving in seven chakras of the human energetic experience, the seven tones or notes of the musical scale, the seven prisms of the rainbow spectrum, the 7 directions, and the 7 aspects of physicality –
7 Senses
According to the oldest Sanskrit occult science of the Upanishads, our physical senses are not 5, but 7. These seven aspects or senses are said to correspond with the seven elements, only five of which have yet manifested. The 5 elements that manifest as visible forms of pure consciousness are Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Ether corresponding to hearing, taste, touch and smell. Ether, also known as Akash or Akasha is still in the process of manifesting. As the fifth and subtlest of all elements, Akasha is not just ether but unlimited space unbound by any material from which the elements in nature spring forth. It is the universal life force and the creative mind and can be thought of as the remembrance of collective consciousness.
Esoterists have suggested that the sixth and seventh elements are Time and Space, cumulating as the cosmic force of completion of cycles as the 7 elements are brought into the height of full expression.
Seven, then is the final number in a series which represents the physical/material world and continues to represent entry into the etheric intra dimensional world.
7 in Alchemy
Pythagoras, the forefather of modern mathematics, who is also rumored to have been a leader of the Seven Sages order of wisdom, taught that numbers were sacred and to understand the intricacies and secrets of the universe, we needed to understand the language of numbers.
The Pythagoreans called the number seven the vehicle of life, as it contained body and soul whilst modern medical science has long since corroborated that the human offspring becomes viable in the seventh month.
There are supposedly seven steps on the path to one’s alchemical journey and the alchemists of the middle ages counted the following as a map of enlightenment: Sun- Gold, Moon- Silver, Mars- Iron, Mercury- Quicksilver, Saturn- Lead, Jupiter- Tin, Venus- Copper. Thereby, infusing elemental expression to incorporate fragments of esoteric knowledge into specific symbols and numbers.
There are alchemical teachings stating that a human being consists of four principal lower elements, and three higher elements, which they symbolised by the triangle surmounting the square. Upon this triangle there is a circle with seven emblems and an inscription as follows: “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem”,
in English:
”Search for the innermost of the earth, and you will, by rectifying, find the secret stone.”
A reference no doubt to the philosophers stone.
Two very important messages are encoded in the above - The first is that the maxim encompasses 7 words and first letter of each of the Latin words form the acronym VITRIOL. Vitriol is an alchemical symbol for the process of transmutation, thus meaning the legendary transformation from lead to gold.
Related to man this means the transformation from darkness and disease - to- light and vitality and access to golden consciousness. This process is the mythical path to the Holy Grail, the souls journey for the ultimate achievement of a pure, illumined, translucent state of quintessence.
7 in Tarot
The seventh card of the major arcana of the Tarot is the Chariot card. This is associated with the sign of Cancer and therefore the sphere of the Moon. As we approach the upcoming portal of 7/7 (July 7th) in which we are in the sign of Cancer, the double sevens dangle symbolic temptation to join forces with the flow of universal power of creation.
The chariot embodies motion and the part of the soul that must guide us to our personalized truth.
The Chariot card features two sphinxes — the ancient animal that indicates riddles. The riddle of what you want actually hides a more complex puzzle:
Why do you want it?
The charioteer is in full control of the two sphinxes being pulled forward on the conquest by some invisible connection. Above is a canopy of stars, indicating guidance by the heavens, as above, so below. The charioteer is holding the wand of the Magician, suggesting capabilities of manifesting destiny through the sheer determination of willpower.
The pillars of the chariot represent the pillars of the Universe, out of which all energy and form manifest.

7 Pointed Star
The seven pointed star is known as the septagram, which has an odd number of points and can be traced in a continuous line. This unbroken form helps give the star its identity as a symbol of Eternity.
Some say that the seven-pointed star reflects celestial magic, while the pentagram, the five pointed star, encompasses elemental earth magic. The pentagram depicts the different directional spaces: North, South, East, West, and Above. The seven pointed star also known as the Faery Star or Elven star, expands the mind’s awareness by adding two more dimensions: Below, and Within. The Seven Pointed star can be seen as a representation of synthesis as it brings together the four directions and the three worlds.
The seven points of the symbol are associated with the seven sources of magic: north, south, east, west, above, below, and within and in medieval times, the symbol was commonly used by alchemists as the seven points perfectly matched with the seven metals used in alchemy; lead, copper, mercury, silver, tin, gold, and iron also perfectly corresponded with the seven planets known at that time.
The Star of Babylon is another seven pointed star that represents the symbol for the goddess Babalon – also known as the Scarlet Woman, the Great Mother or the Sacred Whore.
The 7 pointed star represents pathworkings and archetypes of heightened awareness and enlightenment and is a vehicle of transmission of encoded information down to distant generations.
Alchemists, Pythagoras and Da Vinci amidst countless others used the 7 pointed star to represent the 7 elements of the world as representations of synthesis of dimensions and divinity as it brings together the unseen realms by unlocking awareness or experience of information previously unknown.
7 in Magick
The useage of the 7 is common among pagan traditions where it is a sacred symbol of power. 7 has been interpreted as a bridge of realms between worlds and the 7 pointed star is considered to be a sort of gateway symbol or entrance to allow humans to communicate multidimensionally. It is said that while the first five directions are accessible to the common person, only those with hypersensitivity or extra sensory gifts can witness the additional two spaces. Notably, the land beyond this realm of consciousness, according to legend, can be found either Within, in the imagination, or Below, in the Underworld.
Sevens deal with the esoteric, scholarly aspects of magick and is representative of the search for understanding through intention and ceremonial seeking of hidden knowledge. 7 deals with the activation of imagination and manifestation in our lives through the use of magickal thought and awareness.
In Essence, 7 is what the pythagoreans called ‘Telesphoros', in Ancient Greek, meaning the ‘accomplisher or bringer of completion’ because by its patterns, rhythm’s, cycles, laws, points and paths, leads mankind to its perfect conclusion through the gateway of seven.
We are receiving a gift, a glyph or a glimpse into the essence of potentiality that we each hold within and this seven portal allows us access to our additional senses that have not fully manifested in this reality. These extra senses have been said to consist of multi dimensional perception and fluidity in higher or altered states of conscious awareness and are being revealed to us here and now.
